Landscape Architects Have a Plan

Writer's picture: Justin BakerJustin Baker

Landscape architects are trained to think about the overall site. It is important to have a site plan that addresses the problems with the site as well as areas that have a tremendous amount of potential. A site plan should address the "big picture" and the detailed elements of how the landscape will look.

I tell clients all the time how important it is to have an entire site plan to work from even if they are just considering installation in one area of their property. Phasing of a landscape installation is not an uncommon practice. Its important to work from a complete site plan so that once the phasing is complete, you have a cohesive landscape that was well thought out and not one that looks piecemealed together.

“A goal without a plan is just a wish." - Antoine de-Saint Exupery

What you should look for in a completed landscape plan.

  • You should be provided with a scaled drawing at a scale that is easily readable. Typically, residential landscape plans are 3/16" or 1/4" scale.

  • Included on the plan should be some sort of title block that tells you the scale, client name, north arrow, date and landscape architect's business name and licensure stamp

  • The plan should show all structures, existing trees and/or landscape that is to remain in place, property boundaries, fences, driveways, walkways, Etc.

  • The plan should address your outdoor living needs. Your landscape architect should have completed an analysis of your requirements prior to beginning the design work.

  • It should be detailed enough to show all plant material types, sizes and quantity.

  • The plan should layout all new design elements along with proposed materials.

Having a good plan with all the necessary elements will help you have a positive installation experience with your landscape contractor. They will be able to use the plan to implement the landscape of your dreams.
